Water color
Usually, the Victoria Clipper goes on a relatively straight line from Seattle to Victoria. On the day of my trip, a storm in the Strait of Juan de Fuca would have made for a rough trip*, so we took an alternate – and much longer – route north through the San Juan Islands. It was less open water, and more to look at. Like water on the windows…

*Prior to departure an announcement was made regarding the availability of motion-sick medicine onboard. It was, “If you know you are prone to motion sickness, if you think you are prone to motion sickness, or you don’t want to find out if you are prone to motion sickness, you can purchase tablets at the concession stand.” It was the best twenty five cents I’ve ever spent.

I spent nearly every vacation of my childhood lying down in the back seat of the car, sleeping off motion sickness. I missed a lot of scenery that way!

Glad you popped that pill. If I can keep my eyes on land, it stabilizes the issue.

I think the pill helped a lot – I really didn’t feel the effects of the rough water.

Reminds me of riding the Washington State Ferry in the San Juans – something I did from the age of about 3 nearly every year as my dad would do his research at the Friday Harbor marine station on San Juan Island every summer. In fact he was just there a week or two ago, still doing a bit of research at the age of 85, though he gave up his grant last year.

The only part of this crossing that I didn’t like was the long delay in getting to Victoria! Otherwise it was a beautiful trip, and I can see why you have such fond memories of your Friday Harbor summers.
