Room Views
I was in New Orleans for a few days at the first of the month; my hotel room had views toward the Mississippi River (which was heading toward flood stage) and the French Quarter (which was heading toward being flooded with tourists). So, when I wasn’t in my conference sessions, or occupied with other things*, these were my views:

One Day | One Image 
I think these are really special. The photos are nicely composed of interesting contents, and your exposure or post processing seems just right to balance the outdoor brightness with the indoors darkness. Lovely, both of them!

Thanks, Linda. My post-processing is strong than my in-the-field exposures, if you know what I mean! I tried to get some long exposures of the river at night, with mixed results; it was pretty hard to get rid of reflections in the windows and I don’t know how to PhotoShop them out of the image…

The use of the rule of thirds really makes the top shot.

This is a good example of how you can make a little masterpiece without leaving your hotel room. Brilliant atmosphere, melancholic mood, nice B&W!

Beautiful moody photos. I think I would have spent my time staring out at the Mississippi, but I like the photo of the view towards the town better. It’s a more “indoors” shot, and the difference in light across the bed is wonderful. Lovely work.

Thank you for your very kind comment. I did enjoy that river view, and made a lot of photos from my hotel-room perch.
Although most of the mornings were cloudy, one day the very early sun lit the French Quarter in a nice way – and in a way that only tourists in hotels who got up early got to observe. I’ll probably post one of those photos one of these days….

I did spend a lot of time looking out that window! I went to grad school in New Orleans, but didn’t live near enough the river to get to watch it often, so this was a bit of a treat for me. That bend in the river is the sharpest turn on the entire length of the Mississippi, and because of the currents at the curve, it’s also the deepest part of the river – over 200′.
