All alone on Soledad Street
A store-front mission on Soledad Street in downtown San Antonio, Texas. The door was locked, and there weren’t any signs to indicate days or hours it might be open, or even the name of the place. All of which seems somehow fitting, given its location on a street whose name means “solitary.”

Ah yes, the Lone Star Virgin.

Yes, a well-documented cultural phenomenon. Sort of.

Thank you very much! I was very happy the evening I spotted this scene, which I shot looking through a grimy window.

I ADORE this photo. As a lapsed Catholic I love a bit of iconic Mary kitsch. What is a store front mission? Is it like a small chapel?

I am pretty sure “storefront mission” is something I made up, but I got the idea from a place called St. Benedict’s Mission that’s in an old storefront in my town. It serves lunch (and a sermon, maybe) to homeless people. I got sort of the same sense at the place in the photo – maybe not lunch, but at least some kind of outreach to homeless people.

That is nice that they help people out like that. If they are not into religion, I’m sure they are still happy to listen while getting a meal.

And a place out of the heat, as it’s pretty hot and muggy in San Antonio in the summer…

In the larger version it has something of the US flag to it. Do you think they planned it that way, or did you plan it in your composition?

I didn’t even THINK of the US flag until you mentioned it! And I can’t remember if that back wall was blue or not (I have a weird thing where I can’t remember most original colors in my b&w images….).
My mind connected the statue and the stars…

My colour memory is rubbish, too. It is a lovely image no matter what.
