TPS 26: The International Competition
Levelland, Texas
photographed 11.1.2014
Six. In a row. That’s how many juried photography shows I didn’t get accepted to. That’s six emails that I didn’t read past the depressing combination of “thank you for your interest” and “however.”
Today, I got one of the other kinds of emails, the ones I read all the way to the end! My photo “Some Illumination” was accepted into the Texas Photographic Society’s International Competition; Alison Nordstrӧm was the juror. The show will be at the J. Wayne Stark Galleries at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, from May 18 through July 16; the show will have subsequent stops at teh Center for Contemporary Arts in Abilene, Texas, and the Options Gallery at Odessa College, in Odessa, Texas. Stop by, if you can!

Congratulations Melinda. That run of six emails (from non-sighted juries) must have been getting hard to take. This is a very nice photograph. Kind of like that one of yours, also colour, of a sink in a derelict room, which happens to hang on a wall in my house. This one would go well.

Thanks, Ehpem. I appreciate your kind words of support. And it does have the same color palette as that other print, which I wouldn’t have realized without your pointing it out.

It looks like a 30s colour palette to me. But, the outside of my house looks that way too, thanks solely to fading paint.

It’s also a similar color palette as this photo – https://melindagreenharvey.com/2017/01/31/light-where-once-was-darkness/ – which makes me wonder what it is about those particular colors that I find so attractive.
Your house isn’t faded. It’s retro.

Well, I like that palette too, so keep it coming! My house is retro in so many ways, few of them intentional or appreciated.

All part of the art game…but it never feels quite right.

It’s the part of the game that sort of sucks, right?
