Preserver
This Navy ship was in port the entire time I was in New Orleans for a conference. On my very last night in town, right after I made this shot, I found out the name of the ship – the Kearsarge. THEN, when I looked it up, I found out that there have been several previous Kearsarges, including one whose name was changed to the Hornet. My father-in-law served aboard the Hornet in the 1950s.
And, so it seemed like everything came full circle, right there beside the Mississippi River.

Melinda, you are correct that the USS Hornet was once named the Kearsarge. But the USS Kearsarge you saw in New Orleans is an active Wasp-class amphibious assault ship. The Hornet is now a museum and is located in Alameda, California. I remember touring the Hornet and other aircraft carriers back in the 50s when my sister and I acted as chaperones for our older cousins who often dated naval officers (Cousin Joan even married one of them!). The Hornet is sometimes referred to as The Gray Ghost and is supposedly haunted. I recommend that whenever you are in the Alameda area to visit the Hornet and listen to some of the ghost stories! I believe this is the ship your father-in-law served on.

My post was unclear: I was aware that the Kearsarge/Hornet and the Kearsarge in New Orleans were two different ships. We have toured the Hornet, in Alameda, several years ago. My father-in-law was the president of the Hornet Association and arranged a special tour for us while I was in the Bay Area for work. I don’t remember any ghost stories, though, which is too bad, as they would have made the tour even more interesting!

Thanks. When I lived in New Orleans in the 1980s, my office had a view of the construction of one of the spans of the bridge. And also, of the traffic backing up on the other span during rush hour. It was sort of weird to be back.
