I live in Lubbock, on the High Plains of Texas, where the open skies and long horizons let me focus on forms in the built environment. I find great beauty in decaying buildings.

Like a lot of people, I have college degrees that I don’t use. Mine are in architecture and urban planning. I currently work as a grants writer for a large non-profit agency.

My photo series Where the Wind Gallops is in the permanent collection of Texas Tech University Library’s Southwest Collection. My work has been shown in several locations in Texas, and in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Since January 2009, I have posted a photo every day on my blog.

    Loved the camping story. Now I’ve got an idea what I’ve been doing wrong all these years. Are air mattresses permitted. I want to do it right in the future.

      Good point re. air mattresses. We DID use them, although we didn’t have a pump to inflate them. My sister and I would sit on the picnic table, with the mattresses draped over our legs and onto the picnic bench and blow them up ourselves. Now that I think about it, all that lung exercise at any early age could well have led to my current capacity for unlimited bullshit.

    I have enjoyed looking at your photos and reading the notes. I enjoy the humor and reading between the lines and sometimes reliving some sparked memories of my own related to your comments or photos. My mother also passed in 2005. I also write and I love photography. Been married twice with two grown children – and 2 wonderful grandchildren. I’m 57..widowed now. I havent been writing hardly at all since my late husband passed in sept 09. Perhaps I could try to photograph and write… similar to what you do..sooo I want to thank you for the inspiration and comment again I think your work is truly a wonderful thing! I will continue to look at your work when I have free time at the computer…

      Brett,

      Glad you liked the jail – it was an interesting place to stop.

      I don’t know anything at all about NIK software. Is is something I should be familiar with?

      And, to be honest, I didn’t know “hyperfocal photography” until you asked me and I Googled it. I guess I do it, but didn’t know it had a name!

      I am mostly self-taught, which you probably figured out by now! I had two photography classes in college, an intro and one on the zone system. I hope that, at this stage of the game, I am still teachable, so if you’ve got advice, I’d certainly accept it.

    You are an amazing photographer. I came across your blog while searching for members of the Tullos family in Boulder, Colorado, and discovered one of your photos of an usual gravemarker made of plastic and placed in cement in a plastic dish pan. Do you recall it? You had learned additional data about Jesse R. Tullos, such as his place of birth, wife’s name, and her death information. How did you learn his date of birth? Obituary? Death record? Cemetery record? You remained curious about him, after going to some effort to obtain the additional info. The curious artist….. (Jesse is a distant relative, but I know little about his family)

      Betty, Yes, I was struck by that marker because it was so different from all the other ones around it, and that inspired me to do some additional research. I think most of the information I got from a Google search for Jesse R. Tullos – I am not skilled in genealogy research so whatever I found was pretty commonly available. Just this week one of my friends put forth the theory that perhaps Jesse’s ashes are in the concrete in that dishpan, and I’d be interested in finding out if that’s the case.

        You’re welcome! Definitely sharing the interest of ‘old’ and abandonment; couple of years ago I spent a holiday in south-west of us and loved all the left cars, buildings and everything, well kept cuz of the climate. Totally different history then here in Spain but both are great photography-material!
