Is anyone else having this problem?

I’ve been getting a lot of spam comments on my blog – usually posted as replies to older posts. The comments say things like:

Right oni-ths helped me sort things right out.

What’s it take to become a sublime exnpouder of prose like yourself?

Was totally stuck until I read this, now back up and rungnni.

Dag nabbit good stuff you whireppsnappers!

At last! Something clear I can undntsraed. Thanks!

Now I know who the brainy one is, I’ll keep lokiong for your posts.

Very valid, pithy, sutinccc, and on point. WD.

I was struck by the hotnesy of your posting

That inghist would have saved us a lot of effort early on.

Didn’t know the forum rules allowed such brnalilit posts.

(These are the ones that came in just today.)

So, as much as I like getting comments and as much as I want them to continue, I’ve had to put some controls over who can post. I apologize if this means you have to do a couple of extra things to post your relevant and brilliant comment! Maybe in a while I can go back to the way it was…

  1. I have, in the past, received some comments by folks who speak English as a second (possibly third or forth) language. They usually come in as comments that I would have to approve in order to get posted. I never approve them, of course. WordPress has a “First Time” comment approval system and it seems to work for me. I’ve taken the spam and trolling of others as one of the prices of having an internet presence. There are a lot of people who have dedicated their lives to making the lives of others difficult.

    • You’re right – this is a risk of blogging. Although I’d never had comment approval activated on the blog (until now) I’ve never had much of a problem until just a couple of days ago. I did sort of enjoy the…uh…innovative spelling in the comments.

  2. I always read the comments before they get posted to my blog. This one : ‘Dag nabbit good stuff you whireppsnappers!’ came as a reply to a totally innocent comment I had made on Melinda’s blog. I had no way to stop it as it appeared on her blog – it was related to me as a comment to my comment. Somebody very stupid is doing this for low level fun. The ones listed by Melinda do not look like writing by somebody who has poor control of English. As Oneowner suggests, the WP First Time approval will take care of the problem – when the stupid comment is seen it can be trashed. Melinda, if you got so many of these you could inform WP, and Akismet may look into it. They catch a lot of spam before we ever see it. It is not necessary to put controls over WHO can post, just put the controls on the comments themselves.

PS: I did click on the Avatar of the sender of the ‘dag naggit…’ thing and it took me to a notice that the blog had been terminated, but there were many advertisements there, so I did not quite understand where I had landed.

    • Vera – I turned on the first-time comment approval so now I get notices on these ridiculous comments before they show up on the blog. Every now and then I do notice on my stats how many spam comments WP caught, and it’s WAY more than the ones that made it through.

  3. That´s so stupid, i don´t get any of those, in the beginning I did but with the first time approval on, like Vera and Oneowner suggests and the spam-filter there´s nothing coming through that I dont want to….
Hope you get rid of it, good luck

    • Thanks, Ron. The first-time comment approval seems to have really helped. I’d never had a need for it until now, which is sort of interesting since I’ve been blogging for several years! Oh, well – as Oneowner pointed out, it’s the price we have to pay….

  4. I get spam in waves – usually on old posts too. It always gets caught in the spam folder. It’s just a darned nuisance really. I have viral protection on my Mac too as a back-up.

    • Andy – thousands of comments have been caught by WP’s filters, but for some reason these comments were able to sneak through. Approving first-time commenters seems to have been the key – for now, at least.

  5. I get some, but WP seems to filter them away for my approval/rejection pretty effectively. I just go and delete them all every once in a while.

    • I’d never had any real trouble with spam getting through until this week, when I got a flood of it. And then, as soon as I activated the new-comments verification, I didn’t get any of it any more. Coincidence?!
