Sepo, singer of songs
This is Sepo. He was the head groundskeeper, and knew all about the native Fijian plants. He took guests on culture walks around the island, explaining the various flora and fauna and traditions and beliefs. He told traditional folk tales. He sang to us every night, an unusual mixture of traditional Fijian songs and American classics (like Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffett), playing an ancient and well-worn guitar.
I liked Sepo. He had kind eyes.

A human interest story for a change. Nice.

It is a little different from what I usually post, isn’t it? (Wait until tomorrow, when the topic is: cannibalism. Now THAT’S different!)

I would have loved to hear his singing and playing. He looks like he’s been around a bit.

He does look like he’s got some years on him, but I don’t have any idea how old he might me. I reckon it could be anywhere between 30 and 95…

I like this photo, great exposure, well placed hand and light fixture. He does look like a nice guy. Those walks where he shared his traditional knowledge would have been fascinating.

Thanks – the placement of hand and fixture were complete (and lucky) coincidences. When I took this shot, Sepo was talking about how very few of the islanders ever see the entire island. Come back to the blog on July 16th for more information…..
