Some kind of fern… they look like metal, or it is your treatment of the photo.

It is a fern. Maybe the reason it looks metallic is because of the b&w treatment – I think taking away the color robs it of context, which lets your brain interpret it in a lot of different ways.

Yes. The cottages where we stayed had water in shallow stone basins on the porch so we could wash the sand off our feet before going inside, so we didn’t have to use the leaves…
