I love thunderstorms, and here’s why.

The land’s so flat you can see them building up out to the west.

The drama in the ever-shifting clouds.

The lightning – the kind that lights up the clouds from within, and the kind that makes those long jagged slashes to the ground.

The way the air smells when the storm’s near.

The sound of thunder.

The damp-earth smell of the first few raindrops.

The urgency of the rain, when it’s falling so hard that it’s noisy.

Oh, and you can take pictures of them.

  1. It’s hard to pick a favorite but if I had to it would be the last photo. There is just something about a beautiful sky as the main subject.

  2. I like them all too. The top one, as a cloud photo, wins hands down since the cloud is so great. But I also like the last one with just that one pole for attaching the sky to the ground.

  3. I love storms so long as I’m inside and roofs are chopping people’s heads off.
There’s no storm but it’s raining here in Sydney at the moment and I’m tucked away indoors with no need to venture outside, drinking coffee, blogging and enjoying the sound of the rain falling.
The top image is my favourite, Melinda; those clouds are beautiful and I really like the echoing tree.

  4. Haha! Oops! So long as roofs are NOT chopping people’s heads off!

  5. The top one is such a perfect anvil cloud. I live in Texas too, and I love watching storms come in.

  6. Oh Wow! What a set! The clouds are so beautifully lit. Of the three I think i would have to go with the first – there’s something about the way that upper cloud is mushrooming out that speaks of the power in that storm cloud. Great series, Melinda

    • Thank you, Andy. I love watching those storms build up. From my house, they are not that easy to see, but we have a place out in the country which has open views for 360 degrees. One of our favorite things is to sit out at night and watch the storms approach – the lightning is especially dramatic. Not the cloud-to-ground kind (until the storm is very close), but the kind that lights up the inside of the clouds.

Our drought’s gone on so long that it’s been a while since we’ve had much in the way of storms like this; I am anxious for their return.
