The sign will guide us

If you’re like me, it’s hard to see a 100 mile round trip for a 30 minute meeting as a waste of time. The way I see it, it’s kind of nice, actually, that the meeting was short enough so that there was plenty of photography time left over before I had to head back.

That’s what happened the day I took this one. My meeting with the county judge* was short so I was able to see the town, including this old sign, past its prime but still standing, proudly and vacantly.

*A few days after I wrote this I realized that it sounded like I was meeting with the judge to get out of a speeding ticket or to post bail or something like that. It was actually a meeting for work – the judge is on our board of directors. I am sticking with that story.

  1. I really need to get down to your neck of the woods sometime! Lots of old buildings to photograph. I’m getting better about putting on the brakes when I see one – for a long time, I’d make a mental note to stop on the way back (ha!) to get a photo, but I’ve discovered that rarely works.

    • Oh, yes – the old “I’ll stop later” deal almost never works for me, either. You SHOULD come down here – plenty of old stuff to photograph. Plus there’s not much traffic, so sudden stops and/or u-turns are relatively safe.

  2. It is hard to imagine you, or any meticulous photographer like you, speeding through a landscape … u-turns or unauthorized parking may give you a ticket though and both sound more realistic. In the case of this sign the skill of improvisation as to where one is and where to go might come in handy…

    • Even though I am ALWAYS scanning for photo possibilities, sometimes they slip by before I can stop. Other times, I don’t see the “good” side until I’m even with it. I’ve never gotten a ticket…hope my luck holds, now that I’ve mentioned it!

  3. We aren’t judging you on the people you consort with, or beg favours/leniency from, we judge you on the quality of your photos. Hope that’s OK, being judgmental that is.
Ever notice that word includes being mental?
