Look. And compare.
If you look and compare, you’ll see how very nice the remains of this sign are: there are three full panels on the left side and three empty panels on the right.
This little town is split by the Texas-Oklahoma border. Kids in kindergarten through fourth grade go to school in Texas, and from fifth grade through twelve, go to school in Oklahoma. (As a native Texan, I am not too sure about letting Oklahoma get more years to educate the kids than Texas has. We can all just hope for the best.)

This looks like a mid to late ’50’s sign. I think it’s a beautiful design as signs go. It still makes for interesting subject material.

We drove around the block so I could get this shot – that sign was way too good to pass up.

I don’t expect I get any points for guessing that the left hand column should spell MOTEL. The right hand side defeats me

I can’t fill up that side, either. I suspect one panel was about air-conditioning. Maybe the rooms had kitchens?
But that’s all I can come up with. Google’s street view isn’t helpful: the sign’s the same in their shot.
(It’s possible – though not likely – that the left side used to say MUTED…)
