Orbs
These strings of glass balls were hanging in the sun at Pike Place Market. Maybe those ships in the port behind them worked some kind of subliminal message, but they reminded me of glass fishing floats.

That’s lovely, so delicate – the things themselves and your rendering of them.

Thanks, Ashley. It’s sort of not my usual subject, but I couldn’t resist…

Melinda, could these be modern replicas of the handblown glass floats that the Japanese fisherman used in their nets, or have you wound me up in your ‘subliminal message’?

That second thing you said? About winding you up in subliminal messages? That’s what happened here….

I was just going to write that this hits very close to home because of where my mother’s family is from in Japan. Otaru, in Hokkaido. http://www.hokkaidolikers.com/en/articles/818 It is still the heart of Japanese handblown glass floats as well as Venetian-style fine art glass.
That said, I don’t think they are meant to be replicas, as John suggested. Too textured. Looks more ornamental, as in a Christmas-type manner. But I do see where the familiarity comes from.

George – thanks for posting the link; the article was very interesting. I don’t think the balls are actually replicas of the floats, but their proximity to the sea made my mind jump in that direction.
