Since You’ve Asked
Maybe you recall that I mentioned before that sometimes random song lyrics latch themselves to photos, for no apparent reason?
It happened on this shot, when the line “leading up and outward” from the lovely Judy Collins song “Since You’ve Asked” came to mind.

Sometimes the heart is the first to go
My friend Ehpem was an excellent host, and I was lucky enough to get to see Victoria through the eyes of a resident. One of the things we did was to walk along the beach at Mt. Douglas Park, picking our way between boulders and driftwood. (Every piece of driftwood was interesting to me since that’s not something I see on the High Plains. I feel like Ehpem may have been less enchanted.)
At any rate, my favorite part of this particular specimen was the way the heart of the tree was gone, lost to bugs or waves or something. It had a nice sculptural quality to it.
