Somewhere, apparently, there are watermelons

Somewhere, off to the right, it looks as though yellow meat watermelons are for sale.

I’m going to be honest:  after I saw this sign, I made two u-turns to get back to this corner.  I drove up one street and down another one and never did see any watermelons.  I saw concrete pipe sections, and a grain elevator, and some metal stuff, but no watermelon.  Which is sort of a shame:  yellow watermelon’s my favorite.

Now that I think about it, maybe I assumed too much.  That sign doesn’t actually say the melons are for sale.  It just announces their presence somewhere, just letting us know that over there, to the right, someone’s got a melon or two in the refrigerator.  Good to know.

But I’m glad I don’t have to post a sign announcing the contents of my refrigerator.  Because it would have to say “Scary-looking leftovers”.

  1. You may not have found the watermelons, but perhaps there was a smell in the air?

  2. I find this photo appealing mostly for the abundance of utility poles and chain link fence but also for the sign. I confess I never heard of yellow meat watermelons.
It may interest you to know that a lot of watermelons sold in New York come from Texas and they’re wonderful. I bought 12 of them this past summer and I’m the only one how eats them!

    • Terry County, Texas, which is just a couple of counties over from Lubbock, is a big producer of watermelon. The agency I work for gets grants to assist migrant farmworkers, and a lot of the workers we help are coming through for the watermelon harvest. When they pick the melons, a crew goes through the fields and chops the stems of the melons, then a truck drives through, slowly, and workers on the ground toss the ripe melons up to a worker in the truck.

Yellow watermelons are very good – they have a firmer texture than red ones, and are a little bit sweeter.

Twelve melons in one season is a lot for one person!

  3. I read this sign differently, because of it’s layout. I think it is calling out to passing watermelons to tell them there is yellow meat in the area. Watermelons eat yellow meat, don’t they?

Perhaps when U-turning all over the county you should have had your eye out for yellow meat, and not watermelons since the watermelons would have been driving by, just as you were.

    • Hmmm….what do watermelons drive? Or do they take the bus? How can I be this old and have never known that watermelons ate yellow meat? Or drove? Why am I asking so many questions? Do you think something’s wrong with me? Maybe I need to eat?
