X O

I liked the XO on top of Ehpem’s storm drain and sort of hope that the X is aligned with the cardinal directions. Perhaps Ehpem – who often serves as my Research Department – can enlighten me.

  1. Well, without taking a compass out there, I can say that the storm drain is oriented to 322 degrees true north (thanks, GoogleEarth) and thus if this X was at about 45 degrees to the storm drain it would be nearly spot on. However, looking at other pictures of the X (like this one http://wp.me/p1R4lY-4iv which is better aligned for such calculations) suggests it 55 or 60 degrees. However, I should go out with a compass and do this properly.

  2. And there was me thinking that cross was just positioned to secure the circular access cover. And… I like the image, Melinda!

    • Thanks, Andy.

The function of that cross surely is to secure the cover. Although I am not a fan of symmetry and things being perfectly aligned with each other, for some reason I really wanted that cross lined up on the cardinal points. Something to do the next time I go see Ehpem!
