“The feeling of the rural night”
Every other year, the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock hosts a juried photography exhibition, Illuminance. The theme of this year’s show is “The feeling of the rural night”; the juror was Rixon Reed, of Santa Fe’s photoeye gallery.
I am very happy to announce that I had three images selected to be part of the show, and one of the images was awarded an Honorable Mention.
You may have seen earlier versions of these images here on the blog.
“Chaos” – near Abiquiu, New Mexico

“Leave the Streets Empty” – Santa Rosa, New Mexico

“Solace in the Midst of Storms” – near Abiquiu, New Mexico (honorable mention)

Illuminance 2015 will open to the public on Friday, June 26th at the Buddy Holly Center. A closing reception, with gallery talk by Juror Rixon Reed, will take place at 3 PM on Saturday, August 15th. Stop by if you get a chance.

These are phenomenal and it is quite obvious how an honorable mention is due justice. Stunning!

Thank you, Fred. Shooting at night isn’t something I do often, so getting into the show was a nice surprise.

Well done, Melinda! Congratulations. All three are spectacular. I think I remember the first one, which I loved the first time and now even more.

Thank you, Linda. The first image was in black and white when it made its first blog appearance. I decided to enter a color version in the competition, and I also was able to fix some of the issues I had with the lightning in the b&w version, which you can see here: https://melindagreenharveydotcom.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/0708141.jpg
(Also, I owe you an email from a LONG time ago, and I promise I’ll reply one of these days!)

Thanks for the link. Yes, I can see what you did. I still like your B&W, but I like the color version even better.

I had to do it in B&W for the class last summer, and never thought about it as a color image until I was trying to find images to submit for the show. I decided to see what I could do to fix that one lightning bolt on the left side, and part of the fix ended up making a color image. I’m a lot happier with the color version…

Congratulations Melinda – if you wore a cap, this would be a feather or three to put in it.
I like that top one in colour – nice to see it again.
As I look up from my monitor I see the middle shot framed on my wall, but in monochrome. The honourable mention justifies my choice of that print! And, I am not sure which I like better but it might be the colour one.

Thank you, Ehpem. It was certainly good news! Given my strong preference for b&w, it was interesting that 2 of the three that got in were in color. Maybe I need to do more color work!

Thanks, Andy. Too bad Lubbock doesn’t have ski slopes, or mountains, to entice you to pay a visit….!
