Boarding lounge
The benches at the open air boarding lounge at the airport are well-worn by the comings and goings of visitors to the island.
If you’re not up to the hour and half flight over from the international airport at Nadi, the only other way to get to Taveuni is via ferry. We were told that the crossing takes between 18 and 30 hours, which is kind of a wide range, and cuts significantly into a vacation. The plane’s looking like a better option, isn’t it?

What to do with your enemy
Holy Cross Catholic Church on the Fijian island of Taveuni has an interesting history; the version we heard from Sepo almost exactly the same, so I guess it must be mostly true.
Wikitravel adds a fascinating detail to the story of the epic battle between Fijians and the invading Tongans: the locals celebrated the victory by cooking and eating their enemies with breadfruit.
I like the detail about the breadfruit.

Sepo, singer of songs
This is Sepo. He was the head groundskeeper, and knew all about the native Fijian plants. He took guests on culture walks around the island, explaining the various flora and fauna and traditions and beliefs. He told traditional folk tales. He sang to us every night, an unusual mixture of traditional Fijian songs and American classics (like Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffett), playing an ancient and well-worn guitar.
I liked Sepo. He had kind eyes.

Home, again
I am back from vacation, and am working on catching up things around here. Like all the posts I missed on the blogs that I follow. Oh, and laundry.
Anyway, here’s what I saw on my trip. I realize that it’s just full of cliches, from the palm-tree fringe framing the shot, to the boat bobbing in the water, to that sunset. But, still: it’s what I saw.
There are more vacation shots to come, of course. Some in color, some with people – I went crazy while I was away!
