One Day | One Image 
Looks like you can spot these places by looking for a tree or two on the horizon. I like the depth of field in this photo, with the strip of grass so well in focus in the immediate foreground.

Yes, that IS how I find these old houses. Or, where houses used to be. There’s a place I drive by on my way to work where the farmhouse has completely disappeared, but there are still three or four elderly elm trees to mark where someone used to live.
On a related note, most of the country cemeteries are rimmed with what a lot of people call “cemetery trees” – they are actually Italian cypress, the same as the tall tree in the photo.
