I really like this the more I look at it. Lots of detail. I have hinges a lot like that on a 1920’s piece of furniture. I wonder if they could be that old. on a screen door – seems unlikely.

I overlooked this shot for a long time, but it caught my eye when I was looking for something to post on the blog. The town was founded in 1906 (Don’t be impressed with my all-encompassing knowledge of Texas town histories: I just now looked it up!), but I agree that the hinges are probably a lot newer than that! Blackwell is one of those almost-gone Texas towns; the 2010 census lists the population as 311.

It really is a shame how these small places are disappearing, all over the world too. Maybe the trend will reverse sometime.

In my professional life, I am an urban planner. Last year when I attended the annual conference, I went to sessions about dealing with various rural issues; I was disappointed that most of the Big Ideas about small town revivals had to do with creating festivals to draw the city folk out to look at quaint rural life. It was unsettling to realize no one had any real ideas on how to address the issues these little towns face.
