A downtown alley, looking north from 14th Street. I have mentioned, haven’t I, that I like to take photographs in alleys?

  1. The good thing about alleys is that can have all the wires in them. Where I live there are almost no alleys and all the wires are along the fronts of the houses. If we had alleys, I would be taking pictures in them too.

    • The city is supposed to be putting all these lines underground as part of a downtown revitalization project. There are a lot of reasons I hope the project never happens, and the loss of chances to take pictures like this is certainly one of them!

      • Well, I wish they would put some lines underground around here – many of the streets would look better if they did, and many many boulevard trees are ruined by pruning around the wires.

      • Putting the lines underground is part of what I believe is a land-grab by a private developer who wants to rebuild downtown. “Rebuild” not “renovate.” The guy did the same thing in a neighborhood adjacent to the university here; he tore out all the 1920s and 1930s era houses and put up big apartments and cookie-cutter houses and chain restaurants. When all that happened, his son was the mayor, which I am just SURE was a coincidence.

  2. How can a tree live
in the midst of all that stuff
    sheer perseverance!
