Less than it was
Of course, a place like Santa Rosa would have once had a business with some kind of arrowhead theme. It was, at one time, sort of expected.
I guess the demise of a business with some kind of arrowhead theme is also sort of expected.
Today, the empty arrow points toward a weedy, dusty vacant lot that’s got a swingset and one basketball goal, and nothing else.

I guess that shooting star must have help direct the eye… the arrow was not enough!

I can see lights, blinking in sequence, along the tail of the star, too. I guess back in the day, that street must have been cluttered with signs, all trying to get the traveler’s attention (and $$).

Interesting how the frame is intact but the “arrowhead” is gone and there is no writing on the sign part. I would have expected to see some kind of lettering.

I was sort of hoping for a cloudy day, so I could use the white (and vacant) sign, and the clouds as part of my White on White series…next time, maybe.

There was a time when “landscape beautification” was the fashion and a lot of business had to give up these big sign. But I miss some of these signs because they were actually pretty attractive in there own way, some to the point of being artistic.

“Beautification” might have been the reason this sign was abandoned, but think the overall decline of the town probably had more to do with it. Tomorrow and the next day I am going to be posting signs from the same town; the place used to have some SIGNS!
(Is that provided in terms of being helpful, or is it just shameless self-promotion?)
(Hint: self-promotion. Probably.)

Ha! I had to read your text to realise that was an arrow head, and not a fish! And I am an archaeologist. Does this mean I have been flying a desk too long?
Given the weedy dusty lot, and so on, I wonder if it is a Windust Style point, modified for Texans in size and outline.

Yes, you might want to think about going outside every now and then….
I’ll defer to your (much) greater knowledge re. Windust style, but this one seems too arrowhead-y for Windust.

It most certainly. But then, it is too fish-y for an arrowhead. If it were an ‘arrowhead’, then it should be Windust (though they did not have bow and arrow in those days) in this context. As you noticed on your internet research, it would definitely not look like an arrowhead and people driving by would be confused.

A new theory: maybe the sign was designed to look like an arrowhead OR a fish, depending on the viewer’s expectations and knowledge. (Even though Santa Rosa is in the desert there are a couple of lakes nearby, plus the Blue Hole scuba site.)
