Church window
You might have known I couldn’t get too far into the new year before I posted a picture of Marfa. After all, in 2013, I posted more pictures from Marfa than I did from the city where I live.
This window is on the east side of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The building dates from 1929, when it was relocated to make way for the Paisano Hotel. The church’s veneer is river rock, but the church website doesn’t explain where, exactly, how this many river rocks were moved to the desert, or why the architect selected them as a building material in the first place.

Funny, I was looking at a map of the US last night, trying to gauge distances (planning a trip in the summer) and I looked down to find “Marfa”. I thought, “Do I want to go to Marfa, TX in July???”

Marfa’s elevation is 4,600 feet, so even in the middle of the summer it’s not as hot there as you’d think. Here’s a chart: http://wxch.nl/18ZAW3E.
Of course, there’s a possibility that I could be slightly biased, but I would certainly encourage you to visit Marfa (and Alpine and Marathon and Fort Davis, too!) any time you can. Also, one of the services we offer here at One Day | One Image is travel advice, so feel free to contact me…

I will! I stopped in Alpine once while taking the Amtrak from Chicago to LA. The mural inside the train depot is a hoot! Someone chipped off the tooth of the conductor in the painting…

I saw that mural when I was in Alpine in August – and took a picture of the chipped tooth!

We should post them together! (Also – how is it that I didn’t start following your blog until JUST NOW?! My apologies for the oversight, and I look forward to keeping up with it!)

Thanks! I will sort through those pictures to find it. I can’t remember if it was an iPhone picture or not!

A really beautiful window.
Like the pyramids in Egypt, I look at things like this, and wonder how it was possibly done.

This is a beautiful photo of a great window. I like the tint, too.
I suspect the river rock came from Amazon. They have everything.

Just to clarify: you meant Amazon the giant on-line retail operation, or Amazon the giant South American river?

Yes!

That’s as I suspected.

Thanks, Derrick. You’ve probably had this happen, when you sit down at the computer to work on a photo and it leads you somewhere you’d never have imagined? That’s what happened here. It was fun!

Nice photo and I really like the treatment. Reminds of 100 year old postcards. Did you scan it from one you picked up in a second hand store by any chance?

Nope – not a scan of an old postcard, but it does seem like it could be.
