To feel small in the landscape

082314

With all this recent Pacific Northwest stuff, did you forget that I was in New Mexico earlier this summer?

This wild and lyrical place is near Abiquiu; my class at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops visited there; our visit was cut short by a lightning-filled storm, which could also probably be described as wild and lyrical.

If you want to feel small in the landscape, this would be the place to go.

Also, for anyone keeping score, today’s post marks number 1,000 here on One Day | One Image.

  2. Lyrical is an appropriate word for this wild scene, Melinda. The figures really give a sense of scale, and that diagonal line makes for a really good composition.

  4. Worthy post for #1000. Congrats! I love what you did with the clouds. Conveys motion much better than any of the photos I took there. I have so much to learn! Agree with the comment that the people enhance, not detract from, the picture.

    • Thanks, George! I’ve been able to get some good details from clouds with NIK Silver Efex Pro, using the Structure sliders. If you’ve got that plug-in, I’d recommend giving it a try with your own cloud shots. I used it on this shot, too: https://melindagreenharvey.com/2014/07/15/the-weather-moved-in/

      • Yes, I do have it. I’ve been on the road and so just editing my photos with Lightroom only as I am on a laptop and not going for fine art print level development, but as I get into more of the heavy duty stuff, I will surely use it. Thanks for the tip! – George

      • I haven’t printed much since I got back from the class. But I am following that workflow that Brett gave us, up to the point where you have to do specific print-related things to them. The new posts on the blog are all from that workflow. Later, when I am printing, the images are almost ready.

I will be part of local studio tour in November, so I will need to start figuring out what to print (and sell, too, I hope!) before too much longer! Next week, I will be in Nebraska, and will get to see Brett. Maybe I can get some more tips from him while I am there…

  5. This is a wonderful shot. And the people just add scale, not noticed at first but come out in a detailed look. Congrats on number 1000 for this blog – I am guessing that between all your blogs you must be pushing 5000 posts by now.

  6. Fantastic image Melinda, I love the skies, they look like they are charging towards you and the contrast with the landscape is brilliant. Looks like a great place to explore 🙂
