Mundane

I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of regular-life items and monumental scenes. So it was no surprise to me that a humble clothesline, set at the base of dramatic cliffs and under stormy skies, would have caught my eye….

  1. Really nice Melinda. Looks like, after all, you only needed to take one photo of the clothesline. That does seem to often be the way with photography.

  2. Long live mundane, especially the way you treat it, and especially the way you treat it here.

  3. I like this, bizarre though it is at first sight. Thanks for the mention earlier too. That first sight of something I think happens at a sub-conscious level. That ‘arresting’ moment when we first see something is because something has made a strong impact. That’s what we need to capture. It may be that we are standing in precisely the right spot, or that light suddenly had a particular quality to it. Capture it – and then move on and think what else you see. Otto von Munchow has written quite a bit on this subject – if you haven’t yet discovered him, he is well worth a read: http://munchow.wordpress.com

    • It’s happened to me so many times that I have to think there’s something real about it – it’s surely not just a bunch of coincidences!

Maybe if I were a more confident photographer, I’d spot something like this clothesline, make that one shot (or maybe three, to bracket the exposures), and move on.

That’s not how I work, though!
