An ad hoc arrangement
If you are the sort of person who appreciates orderly arrangements, even in alleys, this would not be a good place to go. There’s not one single thing here that looks like someone planned it; instead it has the feel of having just sprouted up, like weeds after a soaking rain.
Two things to note:
1. That window on the left really IS wonky; that’s not an unresolved lens issue.
2. Check out the concrete blocks holding up the meters!

Gotta love spontaneous and unpredictabe places like this.

Thanks – I found this in an alley, which is where I find some of the best shots.

Great capture – I’m always amazed at just how “perfect” a by chance setup can be – If you had given me all these same elements to arrange, I could not have done a better job with them. What does the reflection in the left window say? “Lofts”? Certainly this spot has “Code Violation” written all over it 🙂

Thanks! It is a perfect conglomeration of elements, all of which cooperated in the disarray. Good eye re. that reflection, which DOES say “lofts.” I am certainly not a codes enforcement person, but I have to think that shoring up gas meters with concrete blocks is probably not in accordance with most codes…

and I wonder if the emergency stairwell will not land on the gaz meter if it is going to be used

Good point – with all that stuff in the alley, it’s probably a pretty safe bet that it will land on SOMETHING…

Very ad hoc. Are they gas meters..balanced on blocks. If this was the UK, Health and Safety, and Buildings Regs would be round there serving notices pronto.

Yes – those are gas meters on top of concrete blocks. Codes enforcement is maybe a little lax in this town?

Unbelievable. What a find—and nicely executed.

Thanks, Linda – another reason I like to walk down alleys….

This is special, Melinda, a precarious ‘why plan when you can improvise’ mindset. You gotta love it 🙂

I’m not a fan of symmetry, so you can imagine how happy I was to find this decidedly non-symmetric scene!

Well, I think it is probably OK – the electricity meter looks like it is well fixed in place, so when the gas meters get loose, there is less chance for a spark setting it all off. Isn’t that how these things work?
This photo should be used on the cover of “The Art of Being a Handyman” or whatever that book is titled. You gotta know this was a guy, actually a series of guys, that created this tableau, so no need to market it to the Society of Professional Handywomen for their training manuals.

The entire thing looks like it was designed by a dysfunctional committee. If that’s not redundant.

I feel set up on this reply but here goes anyway:
Dysfunctional committee is an oxymoron, emphasis on the last two syllables.
Did I do good?

Yes, you did. It’s the end of the week – seemed like a nice, easy set-up would be a appreciated.

It is exactly what was needed. But not just due to end of week – at any time. Most just zing by over my left shoulder, unheard.
