Pronunciation Guidance Included
So. This place comes with helpful signs on every road into town, letting us city folk know the correct way to pronounce it.
If you want to know more about where this odd town name came from, you can head over here to read about it. Once you read it, especially the sentence that includes the phrase “whatever one steals,” you’ll see why I didn’t include the text in this post…

We stopped in at the only business that was open on Saturday (or, maybe, at all – it was hard to tell) and they sold t-shirts with the pronunciation. Maybe we should have bought one…

The photograph is much better than the help on the sign. I have no idea how a Texan would say “quay” – I would say ‘key’, and since that is a simpler spelling and is not on the sign, all I know from this sign is that I have not a clue how to say the name. You should have bought that t-shirt for sure. But really, it should have this photograph on it. I guess you could make your own!

Oh, you silly Canadians. Of course “quay” is pronounced k(w)ā/, because a town called Kitty-Key would just be ridiculous.

Well the Hitty population in this corner of Canada quite like the sound of Kitty-Key which might have influenced our outlook.

“Kitty-key” sounds like a word I need to teach the little granddaughter. Maybe today, in fact.
