The shape of every day
This was the scene on the porch of a little food market in Port Renfrew. While we were there, a man and a dog arrived. The man was driving a three-wheeled motorized scooter, which traveled so slowly that the dog could easily trot alongside. The dog had a tennis ball in its mouth. The man got off the scooter, filled a plastic jug from the water spigot between the chairs. Then he and the dog continued along their day’s journey.
It was very ordinary, and I was glad to have seen it.

Agreed – those moments are simply beautiful, the ones that are so often taken for granted. Wonderful photograph and story to accompany.

Thanks, Tish. I’ve been fortunate to have studied with a couple of poets who taught me the importance of continual observation. None of us expected those lessons to apply to photography…!

Sometimes I think you and I might cross paths one of these days, at some rundown old place…

Me, from now on, to anyone I see when I’m shooting: Mark? Mark Hahn? Is that you?
That won’t be weird. Not at all.

I was a bit sad to have missed most of that scene, being in the store while it unfolded. I did see him driving off with his full water container and trotting dog.

It was an interesting little drama. But I missed seeing the inside of the store, which probably had its own little dramas!
