More on the way

This is what we saw on the way to see this church: last week’s snowfall and clouds bringing the next round piling up on the mountains.

The strength of this shot is down to the contrast between the subtlety of the cloud formations and the man-made cross-hatching of the snow in the foreground. And the light picking out the roof line is a superb dividing line

Andy – the brighter snow on the roof is actually my favorite part of the image. What I learned on this day of shooting is that snowscapes are really hard to expose correctly!

I always under-expose by half a stop with the camera set on matrix metering and that usually works for me. It’s one of those situations where it really pays to check the histogram for blown highlights and adjust and re-shoot if necessary . That’s something I am not good at remembering to do.

I so rarely have the chance to photograph snow that it’s always like it’s my first try!
