Through a wood-smoke haze

To say the island is sparsely populated is an understatement. There is only one road, skirting the edge between volcanic mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The road, which isn’t always paved, doesn’t make a complete loop of the island. This scene is common.

Security fence

A picket fence provides some measure of security, I suppose, at this rural airport.

But mostly, it provides a subject for a photographer waiting for her flight home….

WARNING: not my typical sort of post

The gardeners called this the zig zag plant, which seems as good a thing to call it as anything else.

Obviously, this is a bit of a departure from my normal old buildings and/or monochrome work. I was working on this on a day that was cloudy and cool and damp, so maybe I needed a bit of color to brighten the day. Or maybe I just wondered what would happen if…

At any rate, tomorrow will be back to the usual. Thank you for your patience.

Vocabulary day

081513

Water drops clinging to the flower emphasized the intense colors.

It had started raining before dinner the night before, a heavy tropical rain that fell straight down. Later, back in our bure, we opened the shutters and fell asleep to the sound of rain.

By morning, the heavy rain had gone. Instead we had the very light, almost imperceptible kind of rain that I once, in Mexico, heard referred to as “chipichipi.” And, as the sun rose over the volcanoes, there was a rainbow hanging over the clear Pacific water.

See how easy it is: just by reading today’s blog, you added two words to your vocabulary! And this concludes the Useful Foreign Words edition of One Day | One Image.

I liked this airport; it was tiny but there were quite a few interesting things to look at.

But however interesting it was, it didn’t obscure the fact that I was leaving Paradise. Literally – the name of the resort was Paradise.
