Scenic, officially

092214

Sort of makes you wonder, doesn’t it, if the person in charge of sign placement really intended for this abandoned gas station to be the backdrop for a sign proclaiming the town as Officially Scenic.

Or, maybe “scenic” refers to the marker itself, rather than the town…

  1. I suspect the sign maker was not completely selfless 🙂

  2. In addition to your observations, signs that identify the population amuse me. But the population always remains static, or so it seems! There ought to be a little man with a paint brush dashing out daily: Imagine the conversation to the sign writer: ‘We lost one overnight, Jack. No, wait a mo. I’m just hearing old Benny had a heart attack an hour ago. Maybe wait an hour or two – could be minus two before nightfall. Correction – there are two on the maternity ward. So that’s minus two perhaps and probably plus two coming out. Overall maybe no change. But you never know, there are still ten hours to go. Hold the paint brush…’

    • Andy! Your sign-painting scenario made me laugh.

It also reminded me of days early in my career when I’d have to call the demographer at City Hall to get updated population information for grants and reports. His answers were like the very conversation that you outlined.

  3. The heritage legislation in my part of the world provides for the erection of official signs. Official signs are protected under the statute and can’t be messed about without the possibility of a fine. Even so, such signs don’t go to the trouble of proclaiming they are official.
