This cemetery is located on 5 acres of land that was purchased in 1876 for $155; the land was too steep for farming. The first burial here was in 1877. Prior to that, burials were either in the Oddfellows Cemetery or on private land. After this cemetery was opened, the folks buried in the Oddfellows Cemetery were relocated. I assume they didn’t mind.

I missed this post before, glad I found it. I like cemetery shots and this is a really good one, the hillside really helps.

We stopped in this town on a whim, and ended up spending several hours there. The cemetery was very interesting – the gate we entered had a flight of steps that led up into the main part. It wasn’t until we’d gotten to the top of the stairs that we realized what a huge place it was. If I ever get back to this part of California (on the coast, near Eureka), I want to spend a few days in Ferndale. I didn’t get to see quite ALL the grave markers…..!
