Wingate, Texas, had a population of 216 in the 1990 census, 132 in the 2000 census, and didn’t even show up in the 2010 count.

Great shot, and now I am curious what happened to Wingate.

I don’t know for certain what happened to Wingate, but my guess is that it suffered the same fate as a lot of little towns in our part of Texas. It’s usually a combination of too many bad years in a row for the farmers, no jobs to keep young people from departing for bigger places, the school gets consolidated with another one, no commerce to support the town, and so on. It’s sad to watch, but does generate lots of interesting photo opportunities.
Some of these little places are seeing revivals lately from the oil boom and from the construction of huge wind farms. It’s been a while since I’ve been through Wingate so I don’t know what’s going on there – maybe it’ll make a comeback in time for the 2020 census.

Poor Wingate: my husband drove through there today and reports that there’s not a population sign on the city limits on either end of town. I guess it’s officially gone, and that hoped-for 2020 census rebound may not happen.
