Nooses? Yes, it looks like nooses.

I don’t really know what would have gone on at the ice house (other than the making of ice, I mean), so I am not entirely sure why there’d be a row of big eye bolts on the outside of the building.

But check out the noose-shadows on the corrugated metal wall. I’m not saying that was my favorite thing I’ve ever seen in Marfa, but it’s right up there with this. Oh, and here’s a wider view of the ice house, taken on a previous trip. Before I knew about the nooses.

  1. Nice nooses! (A little “gallows” humor, there)
Seriously, you came upon this at the perfect time of day (and year) since the shadows probably don’t last very long. Good catch.

    • It was pure luck that I was there at the right time to see these. Maybe I will go back there on the exact day/time next year and get some more photos of them.

Also, “nooses” is one of those words that starts to sound funny if you repeat it often enough. That doesn’t have anything to do with, well, anything, but I wanted to point it out.

  3. Lucky! Nooses IS an amusing word, said out loud repeatedly.

    • I’ll try to remember it the next time I play “That’s a funny word” with my granddaughter. I usually use words like “shenanigans” and “curmudgeonly” while she offers “boogers” and similar words that are VERY funny if you’re 6. I think “nooses” would be a nice compromise.

Dude, you’re morbid. Which is why we’re friends (you shoot nooses, I shoot skulls and skeletons–are we disturbed, or what?!).

    • Does “disturbed” = “mad geniuses”? If so, then yes, we are disturbed.

By the way, I really did like that gate with the skulls, and appreciated the life-threatening driving that it took to get the shot. I’ve done the same thing, many times!

  5. Oh yes, nooses on the ice house. Hmmm…
You are writing a book with all these visual stories.
    Brilliant find, Melinda!

    • The thing is if I’d been there an hour earlier, a day later, or any other time than when I just happened to be there, the shadows of those hooks would not have made nooses on the wall. Coincidence that I was there at just the right time? No, I don’t think so.
