Booth. Table. Chairs.

I had a meeting in Plainview, Texas, the other morning and I took advantage of being there to take a few photos before I left. Plainview’s only about 45 miles from Lubbock, but for some reason I never think to drive up there and look around.

I’d been missing a lot.

For one thing, there was this place.

And then I saw this scene. That upside-down chair is what caught my eye. But aside from that, there is sort of a lot going on here. There’s a pumpkin, a small trampoline, a stack of tires, a bell, some damaged pegboard. And that plywood: I am thinking of switching my loyalties from corrugated metal to painted-and-faded plywood. I love the way the faded paint shows the grain of the wood.

  2. The oddest (is that a word?) thing in this photo, at least to me, is that there is a utility pole about a foot away from the house and about 3 feet away from the door. Or is that normal in Texas?

  3. I like that plywood too. I am hoping you can find it mixed with corrugated iron – preferably with a nice moiré going on in the iron to complement the ply. In the meantime, I like this photo even without the corrugated iron. What this picture says to me is “occupied”. I think many of your “abandoned” house photos might be this busy is someone still lived in them, or had very recently.
