To mark the decline
In the parts of the country where I do most of my shooting, plywood and chipboard are very popular building materials. Unfortunately for the towns and the people who are still trying to live there.
It’s hard to imagine that a structure completely boarded up will ever make a return. And if that’s the case, these boards have marked a lot of decline.

This image flows so well, partly I am sure, due to that railing that steps you up to the door.

Thanks, Andy. I agree with your comment about the railing. This was once a grand old house (by southwestern US standards; it wouldn’t be old at all in the UK!) and it was a shame to see how much it had declined. I am sure it’s past saving. (Here’s the street view – http://bit.ly/1m6nsUj)
