20 pound graduations
Here’s the second shot from the Day of Driving and Photographing*.
We are four years in to a drought, but this weekend, we had rain so it was a muddy day. Getting to this place meant carefully plotting a path to skirt the worst of a huge mud puddle. It was worth it, though, to get to see this old set of scales – marked in twenty pound graduations – in the now-abandoned office next to the grain elevator. (In case you can’t imagine a grain elevator, here’s what this one looks like.)

Hmmm, another color photograph; glad you left it in, though the photo might work well in B&W, too. There’s so much detail to find at grain elevators, though I’ve never seen such a wonderful scale as this. Spent a good amount of time at the grain elevator in Collins, Ohio, yesterday. Still operating to some degree, so not as crumby, but still yummy.

I saw the big round face of the scales from the road, so of course we had to stop! (I’ve got a few more color shots lined up for the blog.)

Beautiful and fascinating capture! Love the detail and the colours, and the history! Oddly enough, me dad used to work for Fairbanks Morse, writing manuals for engines. Intriguing to see a bit of its history depicted here. I especially love the detail in the toothy glass/plastic along the edge there. Superb image, many smiling cheers to you,

Thank you for telling me about your dad’s connection (which makes it your connection, too!) to Fairbanks Morse. One of the most mysterious things about blogging is how all these “random” connections line out.

Thanks, Ron – you were a great tour guide that day. Stay tuned, as there are four more shots scheduled from our trip.

There’s so much character in the face of that weighing scale. It says 500lbs on the dial. The scales are ‘out’ for sure!

I think the bureau of weights and measures (or whoever it is that regulates scales) might not have been around lately. I was taken by the color of the dial – which is why this ended up being posted in color.
