Handless King Stands Guard
The cemetery behind this country church was tidy, with straight rows, whitewashed markers, trimmed grass.
The north edge of the cemetery was also the edge of the softball field. The outfield butted up against a horse-racing track.
And this handless little king kept watch over it all.

there is a real enigmatic beauty to this image, the DOF is really finely judged.

Thank you very much. Those arm stumps give me a little bit of an unsettled feeling!

Where do you suppose the hands are now? Did someone take them home as souvenirs, or vandals take them to the ball field and swing a bat at them, or they just fell off and sank into the ground, or maybe got flung about by mower blades till they were disposed of. We’ll never know, but it does make me wonder.

So, now there’s something ELSE to think about at night. Instead of sleeping.
But of the options you presented, I’d guess the vandal-related one is probably the most likely.

Well … I didn’t want to mention it but seeing as how you are awake anyway: perhaps they freed themselves and are silently drifting around at neck height looking to have a good throttle. Not sure that I’d visit these parts at night.

That is a scary scenario.
I did shoot in a cemetery at night; there was a gate about a half-mile from where I was, and the whole time I was shooting I kept worrying that I’d be locked in the cemetery all night. I stayed long enough to make this shot – http://bit.ly/1XgTAZP – and this one – http://bit.ly/1Qq68IP – and figured it was time to get the hell out of there.

You need to do more of that! The cemetery in my neighbourhood has a fence that can be easily climbed, and indeed a way out around the fence at both ends. So, next time you visit, we could do night shots in the Chinese cemetery.

That cemetery would be a great place to do some long-exposure shots – we could get movement of clouds, water, and stars! And ghosts, too, maybe, unless they don’t show up in images.
