Robots. Oh, and writing.
I thought this was the funniest store I’d ever seen. But I didn’t go in to see what their deal was.
It wasn’t until I was working on this post that I thought about trying to find out about it. Turns out, it’s way cool. Robot Supply & Repair supports 826Michigan, an organization that helps students learn how to be better writers. I’ll give you a minute to head over to their website to check it out.
Interesting, wasn’t it?
Anyway, now I wish I’d gone inside and bought a book or a hoodie or some coffee.

Thrift store and a cowboy poet
If you can figure out how to get there – with the Do Not Enter and the One Way and the No Left Turn – you might be able to find some bargains at the thrift store.
But, if that’s not your deal (or even if it is), I’d like to encourage you to visit my friend Paul Zarzkski’s place; scroll nearly to the end, until you find the poem called “Montana Second Hand,” a lovely poem that takes place at a St Vincent de Paul store.
Still have some time on your hands? Here’s Paul, reciting “Black upon Tan” at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering.
It’s a long way from Ann Arbor to cowboy poets; thanks for indulging my journey.

Cemetery Angel
This cast-iron angel watches over the entrance to the cemetery. She’s seen better days – her wings are gone as is her right arm and her left hand.
Someone, with an unsteady hand, has painted her lips, making her look even more forlorn.

Street art. Literally.
Ann Arbor is one classy town. Sure, they have this kind of graffiti, but check this out! The painting is Judith and Her Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes, which you probably already recognized as a work by the Italian painting Artemisia Gentilesche.
It’s part of a program called Inside Out from the Detroit Institute of Arts; you can get more information here.

College of Architecture
The college of architecture and urban planning at the University of Michigan is housed in this old building. And, at the end of the building are apartments; anyone who’s ever gone to architecture school will appreciate the genius behind THAT idea.
(Oldest architecture school joke in history: This building doesn’t even NEED light switches: the lights are always on because on one ever leaves.) (I never said architects were funny.)
