Left in Hopes

Because of its reputation as a healing site, many of the faithful visit the church at Chimayó. The churchyard has many small shrines, each one festooned with items that have been left in hope of a miracle.

This place, Chimayó, is considered a sacred and healing location; as many as 300,000 pilgrims each year journey to this remote place seeking the healing properties of the dirt from a small room off the main church.

Outside of the church, there are various shrines like this one, all crowded with crosses, candles, and hopes.

I’ve written previously about the sacred place El Santuario de Chimayó; the chain link fence along the walkway between the parking lot and the church has hundreds of small crosses on it.

Sometimes a detail captures the overall feeling of a place better than a wide shot; this was one of those times. Olive’s cross stands in for all of them.
