The night game

072613

The thing is that I don’t really consider myself a fan of baseball. I don’t keep up with teams or standings or scandals or anything like that.

But, for some reason, I love to go to baseball games.

When I travel during the baseball season (defined in my mind as the “just before it gets really hot until sometime in the fall”), and I am going to a city with a team (major league, or minor: I don’t care), I will always look at the schedule to see if I can catch a game. So, I’ve seen games in Seattle, San Francisco, Kansas City, Arlington, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Albuquerque, Round Rock (Texas), and probably a few others that I don’t remember just now.

And so, on a spare night in Los Angeles, it was the Dodgers v. the Giants. It was a lovely evening, as we watched the two teams battle it out. When I wasn’t watching the game, I was playing with my camera and watching the falling light play across the concrete stadium. It was a lovely night.

Oh, and the Dodgers won.

Just hours after the United States Supreme Court announced its historic rulings on gay marriage, a man shares his happiness with a Hare Krishna band. In context, it made a lot of sense.

This was an interesting place to visit – the Grand Central Market, the oldest and largest open air market in Los Angeles. You can shop at La Adelita Panaderia/Tortilleria, Kabab and More, Economy Meats, Grand Central Liquor Store, Win Produce, or Roast to Go – just to choose a few at random.

In addition to all the delicious food, there are some great neon signs.

Here’s where you can go for more information.

Four days in to my non-internet vacation. How much do you think I am hating it? I’ll be back on July 7, and look forward to reading all the comments you’ve left while I’ve been gone.

Illuminance: photographic works

The Buddy Holly Center has an annual juried show, Illuminance: photographic works. This year’s theme was “experiencing place”; part of the call for entries said “Can you create an image that is emotional, atmospheric, that conveys your feelings about this special place?”

My photograph from Los Angeles, titled “Not One of Them Real” was accepted into the show, which will run from June 25 through August 10.

Anyway, if you’re in Lubbock, stop by and take a look.

Oh, and without getting too sappy or anything, thanks to all of you for following this blog, and for taking time to click “like” or to post comments. It matters.

I went to an urban planning conference in Los Angeles; a tour guide went on and on (and on and on) every time we passed by buildings that had seen better days. He would always say the building was in the process of becoming loft apartments. Loft apartments! By my estimate, based on how many future loft apartments he pointed out, there will be approximately one billion people living in downtown LA.

That’ll be something to see.

And yes: urban planning conferences ARE this exciting. The next one is in Chicago – you might want to attend. But if you don’t go, I will let you know the loft apartment situation there….

PS – I am pretty sure this building had yet to be transformed into L.A. (loft apartments, I mean).
