3 trees, 2 windows, and a door

In the winter, the trees’ shadows claw their way up the front of the building.

Also, maybe I have mentioned that I have a thing about symmetry?  That I don’t like it.  So, while the window-door-window arrangement here is symmetrical, the spacing’s not, giving it the much-needed (in my opinion) dash of asymmetry.

  1. Nice exposure, it is nearly impossible to sort out the shadows from the branches. I like the symmetry in this photo – it is the right kind – ‘nearly’.

    • Kind of like music that’s got just a touch of syncopation?

      • I was thinking more along the lines of Phil Kneen’s portraits, many in square format. Nearly all are, at first glance, centred. But when you look more closely, they are ever so slightly not centred and not symmetrical. Works very well for my eye. As does this shot of yours.

      • Thanks for sending me a link to his blog, which I have just started following. Good stuff – in addition to the slight off-centeredness in the composition that you mentioned, there’s a bit of off-centeredness in the subjects as well. Not so much as to be off-putting or hard to look at, but enough to make you look an extra beat or two past what you THOUGHT you’d do.

  2. I totally agree. I find his work very interesting. However, sometimes it is off-putting AND hard to look at, and yet hard not to look at very closely. Like this one which has interesting thoughts to go with it: http://philkneen.wordpress.com/2012/05/08/what-people-want/
