I wonder if someone pulled up the asphalt/pavement, or if it was some variety of paving that decays quickly when left to nature.
It looks totally forgotten, and yet there must be people that went there on their first date, or had a fight in the parking lot that left a lasting impression, or worked here for half a lifetime, or other things that some people somewhere remember. Maybe a Bush had their first kiss in this parking lot.

I think it was probably an asphalt parking lot, left so long that the weeds have taken over.
