Why do we find dolls so creepy, I wonder?

The unblinking stare from those eyes? And, in this particular case, the white lips!

Maybe a horror film or two a bit too early in our lives…..

I hadn’t thought about this in decades, until I read your comment, but then I remembered going to see “Babes in Toyland” when I was a little kid. The only thing I remember about it is that it scared me; I read a synopsis of it just know, and nothing seemed too scary. But I was a skittish kid.
Anyway, maybe that’s where my creepy-doll thing came from.

There’s also a couple of famous ventriloquist doll films I seem to recall. But essentially you’re right… stick a dolls head in a picture and it changes the picture completely.

Dolls have an inherent creep-factor to them…

I agree. Also: clowns.

Before I read your comment I though it look creepy. Dolls like that did not look creepy before that horror movie (I forget the name), they were just dolls given to kids, usually girls

This poor doll is the queen of creepy dolls. I sort of wonder how she arrived in THAT position in THAT window.

A rather sad sight, and the partially disclocated head adds to the ‘creepy’ factor.

The hole in her back doesn’t help, either!

Ashley, for some reason, I sort of thought you’d like this one!

This is kind of like a portrait taken in a mirror (or the kinds of shots Ashley makes sometimes), which does make it creepy. I live in a household of dolls, not just the small wooden ones who are out and about at all times and not at all creepy, but older ones with sliding eyes, rotting (real) hair and signs of past child abuse (that is, abuse done by children). Some of those ones are very creepy. Perhaps I need to take some photos, perhaps through dirty glass …

This poor doll also had a situation going going on with her hair, in that most of it appeared to have been pulled out. Given the shape she’s in, I sort of wonder why she didn’t end up in the trash. Or…maybe she DID end up in the trash, but escaped…
I’d advise you to be careful if you start photographing the creepy dolls in your household: I think it leads to bad dreams.

I have just been advised that there are no creepy dolls in this house. Just sad ones bereft of love.
If you were stuck behind that glass on a high ledge for a few years your hair might be in quite a state too!

Good to know. But I still think this particular doll is very creepy.
It’s possible that the heat coming in the glass melted her hair…

If it was real hair, then maybe moths ate it or something, though the doll seems a bit new for real hair. You could go back and inspect for moth casing and signs of melted hair.

I’ll add “moth casings” and “melted hair” to my list of things to look for. Also, I may start a band called Moth Casings and Melted Hair.
