Seeds have been known to lie dormant in the ground for decades. In addition, seeds blow in from elsewhere.

We have some land in the country that’s never been farmed; the spring/summer flowers change every year depending on how much rain or snow fell, how hot or cold it was, etc. This year the place was covered with American basketflowers; the plants were more than five feet high with purple and white flowers on top.
