What fueled her dreams
Imagine her, sitting alone at dinner, observing the couple at the next table.
Imagine her, watching the man, talking without looking at his companion, as he gently cupped the candle with his left hand.
Imagine her, watching the light bounce from his wedding ring.
Imagine.

I used to participate in National Novel Writing Month, where I had to write a 50,000 word novel; I participated for five years and met the word-count goal every time. (The novels were, by the way, consistently awful.) If I were ever going to participate again, I think I’d start with this image: it seems to have quite a story to tell, as you pointed out.

Thanks, Julie. I was channeling my inner novelist here, which didn’t take a very long time, as it turns out.
