What to do with your enemy
Holy Cross Catholic Church on the Fijian island of Taveuni has an interesting history; the version we heard from Sepo almost exactly the same, so I guess it must be mostly true.
Wikitravel adds a fascinating detail to the story of the epic battle between Fijians and the invading Tongans: the locals celebrated the victory by cooking and eating their enemies with breadfruit.
I like the detail about the breadfruit.

The travelers’ beacon
Should your travels take you to Snyder, Texas, please consider staying at the Beacon Lodge Motel. It’s easy to find.
In 2008, a Yahoo reviewer said, “They have absurd rules like no clean towels and no calls after 10. He will make you pay extra for looking at him.” Newer reviews are better, so I guess there’s been some staffing changes. But I would like to know the going rate for looking at the manager….

Roadside desolation
It was a desolate little building, that’s true.
But I actually liked it. I liked it a lot. See how the metal’s not even – one side is higher than the other? And the top of the tall part is all patched, like the first go-round wasn’t quite tall enough? And the stonework on the columns? And those other columns made from weathered wooden posts? And look at how the green moss on the highest sections of the metal roof are the same green as the new spring weeds?
Inside was just as good.
After I walked around (and looked around back, too), I stood on the porch and watched the traffic go by. It felt right.

My friend Laurie recently gave up email, the internet, her blog – the whole thing. She says she likes it that way. Me? Not so much. I will return to internet-land on July 7; any comments on the blog will wait patiently until then. (At least, that’s what I asked them to do.)
Self-serve
This was an interesting place to visit – the Grand Central Market, the oldest and largest open air market in Los Angeles. You can shop at La Adelita Panaderia/Tortilleria, Kabab and More, Economy Meats, Grand Central Liquor Store, Win Produce, or Roast to Go – just to choose a few at random.
In addition to all the delicious food, there are some great neon signs.
