A body of architectural elements

021315

The only reason we even stopped in Ferndale was because, from a bit of a distance, we could see the spire of this church. And from the road, we could tell that the building had some lovely architectural elements. I am very fond of the pebbled texture of the glass, and the glimpse of stairs heading to the bell tower.

Great Food

I think this shot is a stylistic sister of this one, with the lighting coming from outside, the placement of the door in the frame, and the general grittiness of the image.

You wouldn’t believe me if I said I planned it that way, would you?

No, of course you wouldn’t. You’re smart like that.

But in any case, this was a good place to stop for lunch. (I sat at the counter.)

Lambs, and a song

Thanks to a very detailed county map at our hotel in Eureka, California, we wandered to Ferndale one day. Among other lovely things we saw in Ferndale was a particularly lovely cemetery. The flowers seem on the verge of taking over this child’s grave, with its request to feed the lambs.

And, now, because I haven’t posted a link to an only-marginally-related-to-the-topic-at-hand song in a while, here’s a Jenny Scheinman song that mentions Ferndale.

Spires, Ferndale

The thing about being well-informed in advance of your trip is that you know what sorts of things you are likely to encounter and can plan accordingly. That way, you don’t miss the really good stuff.

The thing about being ill-informed in advance of your trip is that when you find the cool stuff, because you think a town’s name has a good ring to it and on the way there you see, from the little highway, a steeple and decide that you might like to have a closer look so you turn off the road and end up spending three hours in a town because it’s got way more than just that one steeple, it makes a vacation day into a Vacation Day.

This was shot on the same day mentioned here. You can guess which kind of informed I was….

Waiting for lunch

040913

We had lunch at Poppa Joe’s (Home of Good Eats – Serving Ferndale since 1882) in what turned out to be the best day for photography ever.

These shots were taken on the same day:
The eternal question, Eureka, California
What water shows us, Arcata Bay, Eureka, California
So they gave it to the dead, Ferndale, California
Just a little sign, Poppa Joe’s, Ferndale, California
There’s never an end, near Capetown, California
And be inside, Petrolia, California
Into the perfect unknown, Petrolia, California

See what I mean?
