Hat Canyon

The man sold me a hat.

Then he said, “Here’s the picture you want.” and led me to the long table stacked with straw hats. Then he pointed at the hat-canyon down the middle.

In the last days before spring’s arrival

The trees had not yet leafed out, but they were giving it some serious consideration.

*Two days in a row with color images? What in the world is going on here?

Only by candlelight

The church doors were locked.

But that didn’t stop me from peeking inside a dusty window on the side of the building, where I saw this small chapel that seems to be lit only by those candles in the cross-shaped candelabra.

Side yard/graveyard

The church yard at Las Trampas had a small graveyard in it.

The village of Las Trampas was founded in 1751 and the church was built between 1760 and 1776. The historic marker said, “Parishioners periodically re-mud the adobe walls, which are as much as six feet thick.” I guess eventually those ever-thickening walls will start to encroach on the graves.

May he rest in peace

These grave-site pickets caught my attention, the way their blackened ends poked at the sky. They don’t seem especially comforting to me, but I will assume that Sr. Martinez is resting peacefully.
