Golf: it’s untrustworthy

030113

The first time I ever played miniature golf was at a birthday party for my friend Deborah. We were seven.

I had no idea what miniature golf involved; it wasn’t one of the activities on the approved list at my house. Birthday parties weren’t something we did either, and I was very shy back then, so Deborah’s invitation must surely have filled me with dread.

But I went. I swatted a red golf ball with a kid-sized putter. Had some cake, too, and maybe brought home a party favor.

When I got home, I told my dad that I’d won golf! I had, you see, gotten the highest score, and that surely meant I’d won. Right?

I haven’t trusted golf since.

Is this a thing?

Each of these Gulf Oil shacks has a boat parked next to it. I was poking around in the archive o’ photos the other night when I noticed this. I think I need to set out across the state (or even the country?) researching this to see if it IS a thing.

Both boats appear to have telephone poles sprouting out of them. What’s with that?

And on a sad note, the building in Slaton has been torn down.
